Learning Objectives


Upon completion of this course, the learner will be able to:

  • Identify the importance of weight management.
  • Recognize the health risks associated with overweight and obesity in adults.
  • Illustrate the key determinants of patient assessment for treatment of overweight individuals or obesity.
  • Recognize the motivations as well as the barriers to successful weight loss.
  • Discuss the roles of lifestyle therapy that includes caloric reduction, physical activity, and behavioral therapy in treating overweight and obese patients.
  • Recognize those cases where adjunctive therapies such as pharmacotherapy and weight loss surgery may be needed and oversee that therapy.
  • Use the treatment algorithm to determine who to treat, when to treat and how to treat overweight and obese patients.
  • Identify appropriate lifestyle treatments and recognize those cases where adjunctive therapies may be helpful and necessary.
